Phyllis L. Nisbett

Phyllis L. Nisbett passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, the day of her 98th birthday. She was surrounded by loving family and friends at the Grace Davis Hall House Hospice Center in Marion County. Phyllis’ remarkable life stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to community service. She was born in the vibrant borough of Brooklyn on November 22, 1927, to the late William and Louise Whitfield, and was blessed with 98 remarkable years of life. She was the cherished youngest sibling of a family of ten children, all of whom have sadly preceded her in death. Growing up in such a close-knit and bustling household undoubtedly instilled in her a strong sense of family values and a deep-rooted commitment to serving others. Phyllis pursued her academic aspirations at Southeastern University and later Brooklyn College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in Psychology. This educational foundation not only equipped her with the skills necessary for a successful career, but also paved the way for her to become a trailblazer in her field. As a personnel assistant at General Foods International, she broke significant barriers during an era when opportunities for Black women in the workforce were limited. Her professional journey exemplifies her strength and determination to succeed in a challenging environment. In Brooklyn, Phyllis met Alfred Nisbett, the love of her life. After marrying, they moved to Elmsford, New York, where they lived for three decades. Following their retirement, they relocated to Ocala, Florida, where Phyllis continued her lifelong commitment to service. In Ocala, Phyllis became an integral part of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church in Belleview, FL, taking on various roles that showcased her dedication to her faith and community. Her involvement didn't stop there. She actively participated in the Marion Oaks America Reads Program, the Utopians (a professional women's service club that provided scholarships to high school students and sponsored cultural events), the Marion Oaks Women's Club, the Marion Oaks Civic Association, the Democratic Club of Ocala and the Cosmopolitans. Through these roles, Phyllis made a lasting impact to uplift others and improve her community. Phyllis L. Nisbett’s legacy is one of profound love, hard work, and community. She leaves behind a multitude of loving family members who will forever treasure her memory. Her spirit of giving back and her dedication to making a difference will continue to inspire and resonate within the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 5750 115th Street, Belleview, Florida 34420 on Friday, December 5, 2025 @ 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens. A repast will be held afterwards at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
