Obituary

On Saturday, November 9, 2019, Sophia Alexandria (Massop) Duran, Loving wife and mother of four children transitioned from this earth to be with the Lord at the age of 46.  Sophia was born on October 2, 1973 in Brooklyn, New York to Evelyne (Massop) Felix and Hensley Massop.  She grew up in Brooklyn, NY and attended Our Lady of Refuge Elementary School and Midwood High School in Brooklyn, and the University of Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. Sophia’s first job was as a travel agent at Mass Travel & Cruises, Montclair, NJ owned by her dad.   In November of 1992, Sophia met her sweetheart Carlos in Brooklyn, NY. Soon after, they both enlisted in the US Army. The two got married on October 8, 1993 and were deployed together to South Korea where Sophia worked as a Supply Clerk. She and Carlos were later stationed in Killeen, Texas where her first child, daughter Alexandria, was born followed by her only “favorite son” Xavier.  Upon being honorably discharged from the army, they returned to New York where Sophia began working at American Airlines.  In 2004, they moved to Ocala, Florida where daughter Isabella was born followed by daughter Olivia.  Sophia worked as a paraprofessional at Horizon Academy in Ocala for many years.  Because of her love for travel, Sophia returned to work as a Flight Attendant for American Airlines (MESA) where she could work and travel to different places around the world. Sophia loved her family and her friends.  She will always be remembered as a virtuous woman, a lover of life where God was central; she was energetic, and she had an infectious smile that would light up any room and make you feel welcomed. She always put others first and was a great daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend to so many. She was a special gift from God to all those who loved her. She was a longtime member of Meadowbrook Church Ocala where she was nurtured and enjoyed worshiping with her family. Sophia will forever live on in the hearts of her loving husband, Carlos; her four children - Alexandria, Xavier, Isabella, and Olivia; her mother Evelyne (Jean) Felix, her father Hensley (“Bonus Mom” Alfreda) Massop; Siblings Maria Lisa, Andrew (Angelica), Leeana, Erika, Christopher and Jeremy; sister-in-laws Luisa (Abimael) Troche and Lourdes Garcia; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews; Close friends George Sullivan, Angela Karasic, Jose Elizabeth-Macias Jr., Norma Sedhom, Monica Amaya, Sara Cleary, and many many more.
