November 22, 1926 ~ December 1, 2018 (age 92)

Roger B. Nelson, 93, passed away on December 1st, 2018, at Legacy House in Ocala. Born November 22, 1926, Roger was the youngest of five children born in Dalton, Minnesota, to Ole L. and Selma Berg Nelson, both children of immigrants from Norway. He was raised in Fergus Falls, MN, and joined the US Navy immediately upon graduation from high school, in 1944. In June 1951, Roger and Harriet Swanson married. They had two sons, Lowell David and Mark Brian. Roger graduated from St Cloud State Teachers’ College, in 1954, and began a 33-year career as a math teacher in public schools in MN. In 1964, while on sabbatical leave, he received his Master of Mathematics degree from the University of South Carolina. His wife, Harriet, passed away in 1974. After retirement, in 1983, Roger moved to Ocala, Florida, to start a new adventure. While shopping for a house in FL, in 1988, Roger met a new life partner.  Marion Schneider Buckner shared being a former teacher originally from the Midwest, and many of the same interests. They married later that year and had a 21-year marriage that Roger described as “glorious”. Golf and duplicate bridge were their passions. They also enjoyed socializing with friends and travel. Roger is survived by his two sons, his sister, Stella Jyrkas and his granddaughter Hayley Virginia Nelson, all of Minnesota; his stepchildren James Buckner and his wife Mary and their daughter Cayley; Janet B and David Hatch and their daughter Jennifer H. Price; along with numerous nieces and nephews. His ashes will be interred in Minnesota.
