Ocala, Florida – James Charles English, 91, passed away on Tuesday, 05/28/2019, at Advent Health following a stroke. He was born on December 14, 1927 in Powell, Pa to Maynard and Hazel English.
He leaves behind his wife of 73 years, Marjorie (Roosa) English, his son, David English Sr., his daughter, Cathy Butler, his four beloved grandsons, David Jr., Keith and his wife, Victoria, Kyle, and Michael, and his sister, Martha Legant. He also leaves behind the family dog, Ginger, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Jerry, his father, Maynard Earl English, his mother Hazel (Wetmore) English, his brother, Frank, and three sisters, Esther, Dorothy, and Mary.
James was raised in Wellsboro, PA. He joined the Navy in 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was ranked as a First-Class Petty Officer. He was honorably discharged in 1956. He worked for Tioga County from 1957 until 1962 as a machine operator. In 1962, he and his wife moved to Bath, NY and eventually settled in Savona, NY. There he owned his own garage for many years. After selling this business he worked for Dow and Co as an operating engineer. In 1985, he and his wife move to Ocala, FL to retire. Realizing that he was not ready for the retired life, he worked for several construction companies. He was recruited by the College of Central Florida to train students in the use of heavy equipment. He always joked about retiring more times than anyone he knew.
James had many passions. He continued to attend reunions with the Naval Beach Group One and he enjoyed seeing his old Navy buddies and telling stories. He loved to fish and go bowling. He never missed a Nascar race. His biggest passion was his four grandsons. He was always telling them stories keeping the family history alive.
